Welcome Croatian Vatreni to Toronto
Toronto is home to over 60,000 Croatians, making it one of the largest Croatian diaspora communities in North America. When Croatia takes the field at BMO Field during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Liberty Village will transform into a sea of red and white checkerboards. This guide covers everything you need to know as a Croatian supporter in Toronto.
Croatia's World Cup 2026 Schedule at BMO Field
BMO Field in Toronto hosts multiple World Cup 2026 matches. While the complete match schedule won't be finalized until after the draw, Toronto is expected to host 6 matches including potential knockout rounds. Croatian fans should monitor official FIFA announcements for Croatia's group stage assignments.
The stadium is located at Exhibition Place, just a 15-minute walk south from Liberty Village along Strachan Avenue. Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before kickoff as security queues will be extensive.
Where Croatian Fans Gather in Liberty Village
Liberty Commons at Big Rock Brewery is the unofficial headquarters for European football fans in the neighbourhood. With multiple large screens, an enormous patio, and a capacity for hundreds, this is where Croatian supporters congregate before and after matches. Book tables weeks in advance for match days.
Brazen Head Irish Pub on Liberty Street has become a popular spot for European expats. While traditionally an Irish bar, the staff are football-mad and have hosted Croatian watch parties during previous tournaments. The atmosphere is electric on match days.
Craft Beer Market offers 100+ beers on tap and massive screens. It's less football-specific but the energy on World Cup days makes it a solid backup option if Liberty Commons is full.
For a more upscale pre-match meal, Mildred's Temple Kitchen serves outstanding brunch and lunch. Many Croatian families have been spotted here before heading to BMO Field.
Getting to BMO Field from Liberty Village
Liberty Village sits less than 2 kilometers from BMO Field. Most fans walk — it's the fastest and most reliable option on match days when road closures are in effect. The route along Strachan Avenue takes 15-20 minutes and you'll be walking alongside thousands of other supporters.
Avoid driving. Parking at Exhibition Place costs $40-60 on World Cup days and lots fill by 10am for afternoon matches. Street parking in Liberty Village will be restricted with resident-only zones enforced. If you must drive, use the TTC Park & Ride lots and take the streetcar.
The 504 King streetcar runs along King Street West and connects to Exhibition Loop. Expect severe overcrowding and 30+ minute waits after matches end. Walking back to Liberty Village is genuinely faster.

Croatian Community Connections in Toronto
Croatian National Parish of the Holy Name of Jesus at 825 Broadview Avenue is the center of Toronto's Croatian Catholic community. Mass is offered in Croatian and the parish organizes cultural events. During World Cup years, this becomes a hub for supporter activities.
Croatian House (Dom) in Mississauga hosts official Croatian Football Federation watch parties for matches not played in Toronto. The atmosphere rivals being in Zagreb.
Café 668 in Etobicoke is run by Croatian immigrants and serves authentic Balkan cuisine. It's further from Liberty Village but worth the trip for ćevapi and burek.
Join the Toronto Vatreni Facebook group to connect with other Croatian supporters, organize group ticket purchases, and find out about unofficial fan events.
Match Day Survival Tips
BMO Field's food options are limited and expensive. Eat before you arrive. NODO in Liberty Village serves excellent coffee and pastries if you're coming for a morning match. Pizza Libretto offers quality pre-match lunch that won't weigh you down.
Bring cash. While BMO Field accepts cards, ATMs inside will have massive lineups and often run dry. There are multiple bank branches and ATMs along King Street West in Liberty Village — withdraw cash before heading to the stadium.
Weather in June can swing from 15°C to 30°C in Toronto. Bring layers and sunscreen. BMO Field's east stand gets brutal afternoon sun. The north and south ends offer better shade options.
Flagpoles are prohibited inside BMO Field per FIFA rules. Small handheld flags (under 1 meter) are permitted. The šahovnica (Croatian checkerboard flag) will be everywhere regardless.

Post-Match Celebrations
When Croatia wins (and they will), head directly to Liberty Commons for the official celebration. The patio holds 500+ and transforms into a massive party. In 2018 after Croatia's semifinal run, Liberty Village was singing "Moja domovina" until 2am.
The Rec Room offers bowling, arcade games, and a massive bar. Great for families with kids who are too wound up to sleep after a match.
For late-night food, Burger Drops stays open until 2am on weekends and serves outstanding smash burgers. Pai Northern Thai Kitchen on Duncan Street (short Uber ride) is open late and has become a post-match favourite.
Croatian Restaurants in Greater Toronto
While Liberty Village doesn't have dedicated Croatian restaurants, several spots in the GTA serve authentic cuisine:
Restoran Zagreb in Mississauga has been serving Croatian food since 1987. Their peka (meat and vegetables slow-roasted under a bell) requires 24-hour advance order but is worth every minute.
Europa Restaurant on Avenue Road serves Balkan cuisine including Croatian specialties. Sarma (cabbage rolls) and pašticada (Dalmatian beef stew) are highlights.
Stari Grad in Etobicoke offers Croatian wines and rakija alongside traditional dishes.
